Alternative Medicines 101

Alternative medicines is a wellness practice that does not use traditional medicine that doctors usually prescribe. Alternative medicines are not restricted to herbs and other natural edibles to help heal an individual. They include practices, lifestyles, and other forms. Alternative practices and medicines are a different approach to well-being based on ancestral intellect. These practices are passed down generation-to-generation and adopted by individuals that understand and believe in their practice. There are many different alternative medicines. Some of the most common include Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Ayurveda Medicine, Homeopathy, Reflexology, Reiki and many other practices.

But Why Alternative?

Unlike traditional methods, alternative medicine is focused on using natural methods. Many people do not believe that doctors and prescribed medicines are unsafe because they are created in labs. Alternative medicines, on the other hand, use natural ingredients and a deep understanding of the human body’s anatomy. For example, acupuncturists use their understanding of special pressure points to help relieve stress and pain. Reflexologists know all the pressure points in an individual’s foot and know how to help cure and relieve many ailments by targeting specific points. All of these practices are focused on using natural ingredients/methods.

Are Alternative Medicines Safe?

Alternative medicines are based on beliefs, practices, and pseudoscience. The level of safety depends on the treatment type. For example, reflexology is not an intrusive method. It is essentially a foot massage. It can cause discomfort if there are areas that require extra pressure, but other than that, it is completely safe. Reiki does not even require physical contact. On the other hand, urine therapy (yes, you read that correctly) has many side effects. Even though people that practice it would tell you otherwise; urine therapy can cause diarrhea, soreness and other negative reactions. Safety is a serious concern for everyone; however, there are many completely safe methods that you can search for if you believe or want to try different methods.

Statistics: Alternative Medicines

Over the last few years, alternative medicine practices have been gaining popularity. In fact, the alternative industry has grown steadily in the United States. In fact, among the many different herbal medicines, western herbal medicine has the largest market. In a research survey conducted in the United States in 2017, 36% of the respondents reported that alternative medicines are extremely effective. In another research conducted in the UK, 50% of the respondents believe that acupuncture is possibly an effective treatment while only 5% firmly believe that acupuncture is not a treatment. This demonstrates that people around the world are beginning to adopt alternative medicine practices.

Conclusion

Alternative medicines, as the name suggests, are practices away from traditional science and medicine. They provide a more natural route for individuals as opposed to traditional medicine. Alternative medicine practices vary based on their background, beliefs, and practices. In addition, many alternative practices focus on a particular element and use that to provide a holistic healing treatment. The safety of these treatments also vary depending on which practice you choose; however, many of the top practices are completely safe. Alternative medicines are a holistic and natural method used by generations to help the body heal.
